The First Ward Community Garden was established in February 2009, and is an Urban Harvest Affiliate Garden. It is located at the corner of Beachton and Edwards Street, in the shadows of downtown Houston, and in a section of our neighborhood that until now has been an area of blight. Our mission is to use this 9,500 square feet of donated land as source of nutritious food for volunteers, neighbors and local food banks; to promote community spirit and provide a place for neighbors to socialize and work together; to create a children’s garden for educational purposes; and finally to create a sustainable habitat for crops, birds, pollinating bees, and butterflies in the heart of an urban area.
If you would like an educational tour of the garden before you start “diggin in the dirt”, call Hana (713.995.8469), Lucy (713.269.3492) or Janis (713.227.1841).
We are looking for a plumber to help us install timers for watering. If you are a plumber or know one, please contact us by using the form below.
We need a volunteer to water the garden once a week. If interested, please call Hana at 713.995.8469. Lucy typically visits the garden almost every morning between 9-10am. Janis lives next door! Give her a call when you are headed to the garden…if she can, she will join you.
